Podcasting in the Media Center

Podcasts can be useful in today’s Media Center.   Media Specialists can incorporate podcasts into their lesson plans by downloading existing podcasts, creating their own or having students create podcasts.

Types of Podcasts

There are two other types of podcasts that can be used other than your typical audio only version. The enhanced podcast includes images and URL’s that pop up at specific times during the audio recording. Then there is a vodcast which combines both audio and video. Both types of podcasts can be created by students and uploaded to the internet or school media center web site.

Podcast Projects and Ideas

Podcasts can display on a television screen in the media center on a continuous loop. Students can review their favorite books in a book talk or book review.  Larger media centers can utilize the podcast for library instruction, library education or library displays. News or history podcasts would also be useful.  The possibilities are endless with some creativity.

  1. I agree that podcast can be used in a various by the LMS and teachers. Our district uses podcast as a tool to directly reach parents and students. The podcast are created by teachers throughout the district, and are aligned with the curriculum. Parents and students are strongly encouraged to view the videos to assist with homework and or classwork. I believe that podcast can definitely be used to enhance the learning environment.

  2. Reading all the posts on podcasts has me excited to incorporate them inot my lessons. Ideas are just running through my brain, but I especially like the suggestions of getting the students to create the podcasts. This generation thrives off using technology and by doing this could get them excited about learning.

My biggest cincern is the parents. Most of the parents I come in to contact with do not have the slightest idea of how to read my blog, none the less view a podcast. However, if they can figure it out, this could be very beneficial when explaining classroom policies and procedures or even explaining a class assignment.

My goal is to create and use mroe podcasts on my teacher blog in hopes more students will want to go and look at my blog.

  3. Megan,
I am so glad you mentioned using Podcasts to help me! During all of this reading I have been so focused on how the podcasts can be used to help others, but I have completely overlooked the fact that I can download podcasts to help me in the media center. My husband is currently studying to take the MCAT and he is going crazy over Khan Academy and all of the helpful videos out there. There are hundreds of podcasts about every single subject. He is basically reteaching himself physics by watching these videos and he keeps saying, “I wish this was around when I was in high school, and I wish I knew about it in college.” Podcasts can be so helpful for everyone and it is important that we not only make them, but we use them to help our students! We stress all the time that every child learns at a different rate and that we are to teach them at their ability level. We can use podcasts for remediation or enrichment. If a child is struggling and needs additional help, we can give them an iPad or put them on a computer and let them review the skill by watching a podcast. Or if the situation is reversed and a child is flying past all of the other students we can use podcasts to help them learn a new skill. I am so excited to start using, creating, and teaching my students how to create podcasts. As a media specialist I feel that it is my job to introduce my faculty and students to the newest and most exciting technologies and at this time, podcasts are just that.

    1. My mentor made a podcast/vodcast of all the candidate's for FEA at the school and posted them on Edmodo for everyone to review before electing officials. Just so many possibilities for media specialists.

  4. Podcasts are fairly to me in the regard of actually creating them. I have many ideas of the use for creating podcasts for the media center here and hope to be able to incorporate them into my teachings. I really like the option for vodcasts. I plan to make a few vodcasts of the teacher trainings that I do throughout the year to help the teachers learn more about what is available to them through our county. Vodcasts will help me to keep new teachers or even students aware of items they may have missed at our school. I have 2 interns that I would like to have them explore podcasting and see what they can come up with to share with their peers.

    1. The media specialist who is my mentor said there is a teacher at Northgate who records her classes on video and posts them online for her students. So I know your idea for creating vodcasts for teachers would work too!
